Southern at Farm, West Virginia

Southern at Farm, West Virginia

The Norfolk Southern railroad painted 20 of their new locomotives in historical paint schemes as part of their 30th Anniversary celebration in 2012.

My favorite of them is the Southern scheme which I photographed in May 2012 at Farm, West Virginia.

The locomotive was working in helper service, pushing loaded coal trains over the Pocahontas Division deep in coal country.

The coaling tower dates the days of steam. The Norfolk & Western's steam engines would be replenished here while working on the mountain. The concrete tower still stands as a reminder of when this area was part of the "Billion Dollar Coalfield"/
