Hello, I'm Gene Bowker and this is my blog, RustedRail's Ramblings!

I currently live in Greer, South Carolina in the Upstate, but am originally from Poway, California. I've lived in the Southeastern US since my college days at Arkansas State.

I enjoy traveling the backroads of America with my wife Patrice (also a great photographer), photography (my favorites), railroads, and learning about technology and how it will change our lives in every way.

I've had the chance to work for a variety of companies in many industries over the years and had the chance to live all over the South while working in Manufacturing Management.

You can learn more "About Gene" where I discuss some of my influences.

Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]

The tracks of life

I don't know about you, but I'm about ready for 2024 to be over with!!!!

It's been an exciting year full of new adventures and challenges for sure.

The year started with a trip to Sweden (first time in Europe) for work in January, then has progressed with me ending up taking over the site management role in June.

Since then, let's see we had Hurricane Helene in late September (still debris everywhere!), the election cycle (who else is glad that is over...), and now work-wise trying to get caught up with orders before the end of the year and preparing for the holidays!

It's hard to believe we are already winding down 2024... but I'm already looking forward towards 2025 which will be here before we know it!

Do you have any big plans for 2025?

USMC F4 USS YorktownUSMC F4 USS Yorktown

Thanks on Veterans Day and everyday to our veterans!

My dad served in the US Navy before I was born and was a member of the USN Reserve until he passed away.  I grew up in Poway under the flight pattern of then NAS Miramar and grew up watching F4s, F14s, E2s etc.. flying over on their way back to the base.  Many of my friends parents were in the military which meant that your friends could move at almost anytime as units were redeployed.

This photo of an USMC F4 was taken on the USS Yorktown in Charleston, SC which has a great collection of aircraft and also gives you a great feel for what life would have been like on board a carrier.  I look forward to going back and exploring more of the ship again soon!

Thankful for Electricity

I'm thankful for electricity.

After dealing with #hurricane Helene in our region last month, I'm thankful for electricity.

It's fun to imagine what life would be like without it in the past, but our "connected" world requires power to operate.

I love good lantern light. The glow is something magical. Same with a nice fireplace or campfire. But having light to read by, power for the computer and power for the fridge is wonderful too.

I really love the old handmade fences which provided some interesting shadows on a bright summer day.

Buddy BisonBuddy Bison

Today is Bison Day!

Buddy the Bison encourages everyone to go visit our National Parks!  According to the website:

"Buddy Bison is very pleased to be National Park Trust’s lovable woolly mascot who encourages kids to “explore outdoors, the parks are yours!” Buddy is an avid outdoorsman who loves all parks and public lands. He also loves to work with children of all ages and travels to schools and parks across the country."

We adopted our original Buddy at the gift shop at Andrew Johnson NHS in Tennessee and he accompanied us on many adventures to parks all up and down the Eastern Seaboard!  Buddy has retired to a nice quiet life with Betty Bison and his younger brother Bubba now travels with us on our adventures!

Most importantly Buddy and friends remind you: "Don't Pet the Fluffy Cows!"
